Manpower India joins hands with PETA and John Abraham to request for no more caged birds

Mumbai – Standing tall, his sculpted body silhouetted against the blue sky, model-turned-actor John Abraham holds an empty birdcage this Independence Day, asking for independence for caged birds as well. John Abraham has always been among the first to stand up for the rights of animals, whatever it takes – whether that means slapping an errant tonga-wallah for whipping his overloaded horse or stuffing himself into a birdcage to pose for a PETA ad. The ad was shot by animal-friendly photographer Alan Abraham.

Under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972, it is illegal to trap or trade in all indigenous birds. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species restricts the trade of foreign birds. However, even though India has some of the best laws protecting these colourful and intelligent beings, black markets thrive openly in most parts of the country, involving 300 of India’s 1,200 species. One can still find muniyas being sold at road signals, and quack astrologers stuff gentle parrots into wooden boxes to help them “tell the future”.

There is no such animal as a “cage bird”. All caged birds are either captured or captive-bred. No bird was born to be in a cage. In the wild, these beautiful beings are never alone, and if separated even for just a moment, they call wildly to their flock mates. Flock-oriented, they preen each other, fly together, play and share egg-incubation duties. Many species of birds mate for life and share parenting tasks. Most birds will not take a second mate in the wild if their first is lost.

On the occasion of India’s 60th Independence Day, Manpower India, the market leader in employment services joins hands with PETA India to create awareness for freedom for all, humans and animals alike.

“As we near the 60th Independence Day it is time for us to include a few more friends in our celebrations. Its time to get united and be socially responsible citizen in our thoughts, deeds and actions. Lets mark the occasion by spreading the message of freedom for all” says Tarun Bali, Executive Director, Manpower India.

“Independence Day should spell freedom for all – humans and animals alike”, says John who is an ardent supporter of PETA. “Birds aren’t meant to learn silly human words or swing in a cage. They are supposed to roam free in the skies and sing songs for each other.”

Finally after 14 years long Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years in prison, in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. And due to this his pending films like Dhamaal, Mr Fraud, Kidnap and Alibaug will be affected. it will also affect big way to Third part of Munnabhai i.e Munnabhai Chale Amrika.

So one thing comes to mind is if Sanjay Dutt is not playing Munnabhai than who should be playing the character of MUNNABHAI, as Sanjay has given an outstanding performance in both the sequel and he has got lot of recognition for the same. It will be a big question in the mind of Raj Kumar Hirani, if he has to choose some one else for the character of MUNNABHAI.

So what you guys think who will be better choice for the character of MUNNABHAI, if Sanjay Dutt is not playing the same?

The very prestigious Remi Award for Creative Excellence at the 40th Annual WorldFest- Houston International Film and Video Festival 2007 was won by Pritish Nandy Communications last week for its film PYAR KE SIDE EFFECTS starring Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose. Out of more than 4,500 international category entries, this Bollywood movie directed by Saket Chowdhury has won this trophy. It is the second time PNC has won such a prestigious award at the WorldFest in Houston. The earlier one was for JHANKAAR BEATS, which won the trophy for Best Comedy Feature in 2004.

More than 500 international filmmakers attended the 10-day festival in Houston. The Remi, named after the famous Texan artist Frederick Remington, is the among the festival's most important awards. The festival is the third oldest in North America and one of the most prestigious in the world. As Ridley Scott said while accepting his Remi Award, "Worldfest is in the business of validating excellence!" PNC is one of the only production houses to have won two awards in such quick succession at WorldFest.

Pamela returned for her appearance at the World Wrestling Federation's WrestleMania XI on April 2, 1995, but as the guest valet for WWF World Heavyweight Champion Diesel and not the Royal Rumble winner, his opponent Shawn Michaels, who ended up being accompanied to the ring by Jenny McCarthy.

The reason she accompanied Diesel instead was that Shawn Michaels had a real life altercation with her then husband, Tommy Lee, backstage. It was written into the script that Pamela wanted to stay away from Shawn but no official reason was given.

In anticipation of her appearance at the Royal Rumble, several skits featured wrestlers fawning over Pamela were produced. After an elaborate wedding on April 20, where the who's who of Bollywood were invited, it was time for Aishwarya Rai's bidaai ceremony.

The bidaai -- where the bride says goodbye to her parents and relatives, and leaves for her husband's home -- took place at Ash's Bandra home, La Mer.

At about 5:30 pm, the Bachchans left with Ash for Prateeksha.

As the car was entering the bungalow, some photographers, who were trying to get pictures, were manhandled by a Black Cat commando. In a Bollywoodish twist, a model cum actress who claimed she was married to actor Abhishek Bachchan attempted suicide outside the Bachchans' home early on Friday morning.

Jhanvi Kapoor cut her wrist outside Prateeksha, the Bachchans' bungalow in Juhu, claiming she unable to bear Abhishek Bachchan's marriage to Aishwarya Rai later in the day.

Kapoor tried to file a complaint against Bachchan Jr with the Juhu police, but the complaint has not been registered. In an ironic twist, she has been arrested for attempting to commit suicide.

"We did not register the complaint because she was in a drugged state. We told her to come later with her parents," senior inspector of Juhu police station, Pradeep Shinde, said.

Meanwhile, Kapoor told mediapersons that she met the actor while he was filming for Dus. Jhanvi was one of the dancers in the song, Dus bahane. She claimed that they have been dating for the last two years, and were meeting regularly in Juhu.

'We exchanged phone numbers and used to interact regularly through e-mails,' Kapoor told the media.

She also claimed that Abhishek put sindoor on her forehead last year, and married her in the presence of some friends.

However, when asked for a photograph or any other proof of wedding, she refused to give it saying, 'When you love someone, you don't need proof.'

She also did not reveal her friends' identities.

Meanwhile, television channels claimed that Kapoor was a divorcee and was married to one of the sons of Maulana Kalbe Sadiq of the Muslim Personal Law Board in Lucknow.

Kalbe Sadiq, who was out of the country, has confirmed that Kapoor's real name was Naina Rizvi and that she was his former daughter-in-law.

Kapoor, however, has denied this.

She claimed her father was a Kapoor and that he died when she was a year old. Later, her mother was remarried to a Muslim.

'I was never married,' Kapoor insisted. 'My mother is in Scotland and I have been in Mumbai for nearly two years now,' she added.

The Bachchans have maintained silence on the issue.

You may have already heard of the upcoming film When Kiran Met Karen because of its controversial subject - an Indian-American actress in New York falls in love with her female co-star while shooting a film in which she plays a lesbian – and because of who's playing the lead. Or rather, who's not playing it.

Bollywood actress Perizaad Zorabian made international headlines in July when she turned down the role due to her “own personal inhibitions about playing a lesbian”, even as she acknowledged, “Kiran is a fantastic role for any actor who has the courage to think with an open mind.”

There has been much anticipation since then over who would take the lead. Now, in an exclusive interview with AfterEllen.com, director Manan Katohora reveals that the film's star will be Indian-American actress Purva Bedi (American Desi, Green Card Fever).

In an interview with Bedi this week, she told us, “The other actress, Perizaad Zorabian, who is a lovely, lovely person and a lovely actress — she's coming from Bollywood, and there is not a single actress … living in India … who cares about her career there who could play this part.” Bedi added with a laugh, “'Cause I know that the director met with people and talked to people there and everyone — you know, the second they even read the synopsis were like, ‘sorry.'”

But Bedi herself, who has built her acting career in the United States, does not feel the same stigma that Zorabian did. “That's one of the reasons I really want to do the movie … 'cause you know that once the movie's made, everyone in India 's going to watch it,” Bedi said. “I want to make this movie so that actresses there can start to play those parts and not be so scared of it.”

Unlike Katohora's previous film, Arya, which was a straight-to-DVD thriller, When Kiran Met Karen is targeted toward a “global audience … and will be a theatrical release worldwide,” said Katohora in an email. “I have started the dialogue with several Asian distributors back home and some niche distributors here in North America.” The film is co-written by Sumita Sheth (executive editor of egothemag.com and DesiLit magazine) and Katohora, who also directs the film.

Composer AR Rahman has just fulfilled a long-cherished dream by launching his own music label, KM Music.

"For a long time now I wanted to float my own label KM Music. My label won't market the music. It'll just distribute music recorded in my studio in Chennai to large music companies like Sony," Rahman told IANS.

KM are the initials of a Sufi name from the south that Rahman wants to honour through his music.

"Basically, the creative aspects and vision of the music we produce will be our lookout, not the marketing. I've no idea of the non-creative and fiscal side of the music business.

"Digital downloads are easy for me. But to go into the nitty-gritty of music marketing is difficult for a creative person like me. Better to restrict myself to what I know. So I'd rather keep out of the marketing."

He clarifies that none oh his film projects will be on his KM label.

"My label will be devoted to putting out alternate music - the kind of sound I don't have the freedom to create in movies. This idea of a music label was with me for sometime now. But I didn't want to announce it until I had some of the music ready."

Now Rahman is all set to put out a bunch of albums on his label.

"There's an artiste from Britain, another will feature a mix of artistes from India and the US, another is a Tamil poetry project - it's all experimental and eclectic. Let's see how it goes.

"Though I won't be directly involved in the production of all the music on my label, I'll certainly be involved in all my projects. In fact, the reason I built this large studio in Chennai was to finally start this label. No one can use the facilities in this studio as well as me."

If you have already set eyes on the golden box embossed with a double A then you are probably one of the few A-listers who have been invited for Bollywood’s wedding of the year.

Yes, this box is the invite for the much talked about Ash-Abhi wedding to be held on April 20.

The wedding card comes in a big box, with three parts tied together with a ribbon.

The first contains the invite while the second contains 24 pieces of a special mithai made with chocolate imported from Switzerland and the third box contains a Ganesh idol.

The card also has the emblem 'AA' embossed on red in white gold.

The second page of the card has Lord Ganesh embossed on it, followed by a few shlokas printed in golden letters.

The third page has a Hindi poem written by late poet and Amitabh’s father Harivanshrai Bachchan while the fourth and fifth pages contain the actual invitation to the wedding at Prateeksha, in Hindi and English.

The fifth and sixth pages give out the ceremonial details of the sangeet ceremony on April 18 and the wedding on the 20th. And the last page has the names of the members of the Bachchan and Rai family, along with those of close friend and SP leader Amar Singh and family.

For a personal touch, each card has been signed by the parents of the bride and groom.

Only 100 A-listers have got their hands on this golden invite for Bollywood's golden couple. The guest list includes Ajay Devgan, Suniel Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher with family, Danny Denzongpa, Karan Johar, Yash Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar and the man behind the original Don Chandra Barot.

While Bollywood's Khan-daan has been given a cold shoulder, Sahara's Subroto Roy, Reliance honcho Anil Ambani and family will grace the occasion. Add to this another 100 invitees that include 50 relatives from the groom's and the bride's families.

No doubt, UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh will make an appearance to bless the couple and contrary to rumours, no invitation has been sent to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and family.

And here’s the real surprise – none of Abhishek's leading ladies have been invited. So, no Preity Zinta or Rani Mukherji to up the glam quotient.

Legal action over Gere, Shilpa kiss

Three Indian lawyers have filed complaints in court against Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty for kissing in public.

The complaints were filed on Tuesday, a day after angry crowds in several Indian cities burned effigies of Richard Gere after he took Celebrity Big Brother winner Shetty into his arms and kissed her several times on the cheeks during an Aids-awareness event in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Gupta in the north-western Indian city of Jaipur ordered a private television news channel, NDTV, to send the original video recording of the incident by next week, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Such cases are quite common against celebrities in India whose legal system is desperately overburdened and disorganised, causing lengthy delays.

They are sometimes filed strictly to get media publicity.

Vidya Balan is a Tamilian from Kerala. She is from the Iyer community. She comes from a middleclass family from Palghat, on the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Vidya did her schooling from St Antony's School and later on joined St Xavier's College from where she graduated in sociology.

When she was doing her MA from Mumbai University, she was offered a role in a Malayalam film titled Chakram with Mohanlal, one of Vidya’s favorite actors. However, the project was shelved mid-way and Vidya had to wait for few more years to make her movie debut.

She made her debut as a model in a Surf Excel advertisement in 1998. She has acted in scores of ad films, most of which were directed by Pradeep Sarkar.

A couple of months later, she featured in three music videos (again directed by Sarkar) for ‘Euphoria’, Shubha Mudgal and Pankaj Udhas.

Vidya Balan started work as an actress in the Malayalam movie Chakram, paired against Mohanlal, however the film was abandoned mid-way through production. After making her debut in television advertising as a model for a Surf Excel advertisement in 1998, she proceeded to do over 25 TV ads, (mostly directed by Pradeep Sarkar), followed with a variety of acting stints in music videos (Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal and Pankaj Udhas), Hindi TV soap operas (Hanste Khelte and Hum Paanch) and a Bengali movie, Bhaalo Theko, for which she won the Best Actress Anand Lok Puraskar award in Kolkata.

In the meantime, she acted in Bengali movie Bhalo Theko with actor Joy Sengupta. She even won the ‘best actress’ Anand Lok Puraskar in Kolkata for her performance in the movie.

It was in Mumbai, during a pop concert, when filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra approached her to play the female lead in his movie Parineeta, to be directed by Pradeep Sarkar.

Vidya had to go through 40 screen tests and 17 make-up shoots before she was finally chosen for the lead role in the film.

Vidya has a very traditional Indian look in contrast to most of today's Bollywood starlets. She is associated with AmFar (Americans for AIDS Research) and Hale House, a home for children born with HIV and those affected by Drug Addiction. She also involves herself with the Harvard AIDS Institute, by Hosting Forums and participating in events throughout the year. No wonder that Vidya Balan is one of the most talked about names in Bollywood today.

From talking about India's vastness and diversity to highlighting the increasing problem of HIV/AIDS in India, a cause that she is closely associated with, Shilpa Shetty has done it all.

Lionsgate has boarded martial-arts actioner "The Forbidden Kingdom," which pairs Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time on the bigscreen.
Indie studio is planning a September 2008 domestic release. Casey Silver produces.

The Weinstein Co. is partnering with Lionsgate on the project, picking up distrib rights in Spain, France and Latin America. Lionsgate will distribute in the U.K.

Director Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King," "Stuart Little") is set to begin lensing the pic in China on May 2 from a script by John Fusco. Action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who has worked on films including "The Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," is creating the fight sequences.

Relativity Media is financing the pic, with company topper Ryan Kavanaugh taking an exec producer credit. Relativity will handle foreign sales.

"Casey Silver scored a real coup in bringing together two titans of martial arts, Jackie Chan and Jet Li," Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said.

Based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king, story revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. Teen is transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king.

Li is set to play two roles, that of the monkey king and the silent monk. Chan will pay the monk T'sa-Ho.

When promoting the U.S. bow of Li's most recent movie, "Fearless," Rogue Pictures touted it as his last martial-arts epic. "Forbidden" is being described as more of an action-adventure with fight sequences.

Spiderman makes Bhojpuri debut

New Delhi: Spiderman is sure going places — not only is he sporting a brand new black costume in the third installment of the series, he is all set to speak a different tongue as well.

Not literally, but Spiderman 3 will be the first Hollywood film to be dubbed in Bhojpuri, when it releases next month.

And these could well be the dialogues that our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman could be mouthing in good old Bhojpuri.

"Till date, people have watched Spiderman in English and Hindi, now the wait is
over and you can watch it in Bhojpuri," says Bhojpuri actor Rani Chatterjee.

But a Bhojpuri Spiderman doesn't come cheap. A whopping Rs 3 crore is being spent to dub it; an amount that can fund two Bhojpuri films. And as many as 50 to 60 prints of this Bhojpuri Spiderman will be released.

"When Spiderman will start talking in Bhojpuri, we think that it will have a magical effect on people," says Marketing Head of Percept, Naveen Shah.

Well, this is definitely music to the ears of Bhojpuri audience. "Oh, my God! What is this that flies towards us from the skies," says Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishen.

‘Huge’ plans for Adnan Sami

Adnan Sami has just shown us all what a winner is all about. The man who today weighs 97 kilos is all set to launch his new album, Kisi Din, which features the sexy Yana Gupta, on April 12. The hosts of the event have some ‘big’ plans for the launch. They plan to put up a 97 feet long hoarding – a kind of tribute to Sami’s weight loss. Says Devgan Sampat, “We have the privilege of hosting the music release of Adnan's album. This is the first time he’ll be making a public appearance after his weight loss, which is why we plan to make in a grand event.” Can it get any ‘bigger’?

Kavita Krishnamurthy honoured

Kavita Krishnamurthy, who has been in the industry for a long time now, has added many feathers to her cap of achievements.

And only recently she added one more – The singer was awarded the ‘Samrat Vikramaditya Purashkar’ at a grand event in Ujjain by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Chauhan.

Shilpa Shetty’s ‘emotional’ baggage

Last week we spotted Shilpa Shetty and her mom Sunanda, who were returning from Malaysia, waiting endlessly at Mumbai's international airport. Shilpa, who had a shawl wrapped around her, was waiting with mom at the luggage counter to claim their bags. And they were overheard cribbing about how in spite of traveling first class, they didn’t get their luggage on time. Tch! Tch!
